Cylinders - Revisited
Those serious about wheel throwing are welcomed back to class with the assignment that was their first big challenge - the cylinder. Student need to create one perfect cylinder. That is 6 inches in height and trimmed like a pro. This should be a rather simple assignment, but if the student has been off of the wheel for some time is can be a bit of a difficult task.
Cylinder Shapes with Lids
Two Piece Vases
Students are encouraged to find images of more difficult vase shapes, but will be allowed to create a final ceramic piece by joining two individual thrown pieces. The challenge for the students this time is making sure that the two pieces fit together almost seamlessly. Students will use callipers to measure the one thrown piece in order to make another of the same size/width. The pieces are then joined while leather hard and allowed to dry slowly.
The Plate
The plate is a relative simple piece to make. The centering process is the same, but the hump of clay is made much flatter. If you watch the video below, you can see how the centering process is done.
Chip and Dip Set
Once students ave learned to make a plate, it should be relatively easy to move onto the chip & dip set. The base of the set is a large plate that has its edges curled up a bit more. This allows for the set to be able to hold more chips. Another small bowl is ten thrown and attached to the plate once both pieces are leather hard.
Students will also be taught to thow the chip and dip set as one piece, as seen in the videos below.

Tea Pots
Teapots can be made in several different ways, but they all have the same components.... That is: an area that holds water, a handle, a spout and some sort of lid. Students will be shown how to make a basic teapot, but if they choose to make one that has a different lid, that can be demonstrated as well.
Teapots have a lot of personality to them and that is reflected in the person that makes or uses it. Students are encouraged to find a teapot the "speaks to them" and try their best to create the one that fits them best.

Throwing 5lbs of Clay
Go big or go home, is the well know saying. This lesson is geared to push the students to use more clay then they have been accustomed to. Students generally have been throwing with 2.5 pounds of clay or less. For this assignment it is encouraged that the students watch a couple videos to help them understand ways to master more clay.
