Wheel Throwing Concentration
There is a $20 lab fee for the class, just as there was for Ceramics 1. Below you will find the syllabus and a letter that explains the fee for this class.

Cylinders
The cylinder is the base shape that all wheel throwers need to master. Students are asked to create approximately 6 cylinders with in an 8 week time frame (the first half of the semester). Once the cylinder is mastered students will create vases, mugs and then bowls. See the attached website to help "Need Help Centering" for more info

Vases
Now that the cylinder has been mastered, its time to try and give it some shape. This is accomplished by applying force inward or outward on the clay once the cylinder form has been made. Students will be asked to create two cylinders of a certain shape and one of their own creation

Mugs
Mugs are created in a similar fashion to vases, but the mug is not as tall. The mug will also have a handle added to the side. To begin, the mug opening needs to be opened a bit larger then was is done with the cylinder. It can be pulled up in the same fashion. Once the mug is at the right height the mug can be shaped, like the vase.
The handle is easiest created using a coil method, where the one end is tapered. It is the made flat and can be attached once the correct size has been determined. One important thing to remember.... the curve of the handle should not exceed the top of the mug!

Bowls
Bowls are probably the most desired pieces that students want to create. Many students can't wait to make a bowl that they can eat out of. Bowls are one of the easier pieces that students will make, although some styles are very difficult to master. The clay is still centered the same way, but the opening at the base is made larger then the vase or mugs. The bowls sides are generally pulled up and outwards, instead of just up and inwards. Trimming is a bit more challenging, but can be picked up rather quickly.
